English Sentence Structure 2 Complex Sentences This is the second part in our series about sentence structure and word order. I hope that this will help our students and their writing. The video below will help explain complex sentences. These are longer sentences in English made up of one independent clause (simple sentence) and one dependent clause (incomplete sentence). Often times these longer sentences are confusing and students start making mistakes when trying to speak or write them. Watch the video below and do the exercises: Write your answers in comments, and well respond.Use the subordinates below to create sentences:because, after, before, if, since, while, when, once_______she left for Mexico _____ the play had finished ____Im tired ________ she was seeing other men._____we get the final approval ______she saw me ______she was making dinner1. He didnt see her __________________.2. I came home late __ ________________.3. ______________________, Im going to have some coffee.4. ______________________, Paul went to the gym.5. He was really angry with her, ___________________.6. Volunteer Spotlight CJ Langley, HEART volunteer at Billingsville - Heart Math Tutoring
Volunteer Spotlight â" CJ Langley, HEART volunteer at Billingsville - Heart Math Tutoring Volunteer Spotlight â" CJ Langley, HEART volunteer at Billingsville Volunteer Spotlight â" CJ Langley, HEART volunteer at Billingsville November 28, 2013 Several months into his new role on EnPro Industriesâ accounting team, an invitation from a colleague caught C. J.âs attention. âWell create teams to cover a weekly tutoring commitment in support of students who need help. Who wants to âgive backâ?â his colleague Paul Pathikal advertised at an ice cream break one afternoon. âIt really confirmed my decision,â C. J. says of his recent career move. A product of public schools himself, from Jacksonville NC to UNC-CH, C. J. was intrigued by this opportunity to support the community. He remembered weekly visits to the library with his aunt and cousins during summer breaks that kickstarted his desire to read as well as his psychology studies at UNC-CH where he completed an Honors thesis on gender differences in African American studentsâ attitudes towards education. HEART Tutoring would provide an opportunity to see and shape this, firsthand. When C. J. was introduced to his third grade HEART Tutoring student, he was nervous. âKids are so honest!â he explains. He quickly saw that Jazmine, although several years below grade level in math, had much potential and simply needed more support. As weeks passed, Jazmine became demonstrably more enthusiastic about learning and unabashedly excited to work with C. J., asking, âWhen are you coming? Next Wednesday?â C. J. says working with Jazmine makes him grateful for the support he received from his family growing up. Just a few weeks ago, he sent a text to his mother and aunt thanking them for nourishing his scholastic growth by challenging him academically. In the office, EnPro colleagues enjoy sharing reports of their studentsâ progress and treasure the deepened perspective gained through service each week.

What You Need to Know About the ACT Math Section
What You Need to Know About the ACT Math Section ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog The ACT Math section tests math skills that every high school student should have. Even if you think you are good at math, it wonât be a walk in the park, and even if you think you are bad at math, it wonât be impossible. It will test not just what you already know, but your ability to figure things out on the fly, so memorization and practice are both a necessary part of the preparation process. Format While the other multiple choice sections on the ACT have four answer choices, the questions in the ACT Math section have five. You are allowed sixty minutes to answer sixty questions, but this doesnât mean that each question will take a minute to answer. The questions span a range of difficulties, so some you will be able to answer quickly while others will take longer Instructions While each version of the ACT will have different questions (you wonât see the same questions if you take the test more than once), the instructions are always identical. On test day you should already know the instructions for each section by heart so you donât have to spend time reading them. These are the instructions for the Math section: âAfter solving each problem, pick the correct answer from the five given and fill in the corresponding oval on your answer sheet. Solve as many problems as you can in the time allowed. Do not worry over problems that take too much time; skip them if necessary and return to them if you have time. Calculator use is permitted on the test. Calculators can be used for any problem on the test, though calculators may be more harm than help for some questions. Note: unless otherwise stated on the test, you should assume that: 1. Figures accompanying questions are not drawn to scale. 2. Geometric figures exist in a plane. 3. When given in a question, âlineâ refers to a straight line. 4. When given in a question, âaverageâ refers to the arithmetic mean.â Problem Types There are two types of math problems on the ACT, Basic Problems and Word Problems. Basic problems are written out in mathematical symbols and equations and are self-explanatory. Word problems are written in words and sentences. In order to solve word problems you have to be able to translate them into mathematical formulas. Subjects The content of the problems in the Math section is taken from the following subjects: Pre-Algebra Elementary Algebra Intermediate Algebra Coordinate Geometry Plane Geometry Trigonometry Note that AP subjects like calculus and statistics are not included. Just because you have taken more advanced math classes doesnât necessarily mean that you will have an edge on this part of the exam over someone who hasnât. Educational day out Exploris, Northern Ireland
Educational day out Exploris, Northern Ireland Did you know that you could go and see rescued seals close-up in Northern Ireland? Exploris (formerly the Northern Ireland Aquarium) plays home to lots of injured and abandoned seals and forms a base for them in which to be treated and recuperate. Part heart-rending, part inspiring, this little seal sanctuary is just one of the highlights of the aquarium, which is located in the conservation village of Portaferry. Portaferry sits on the shores of the Marine Nature reserve of Strangford Lough, which contains more than 70 per cent of all of the marine species in Northern Irish waters - making it the ideal place to see and learn about an amazing array of sea life. Take a tour of the discovery pools to observe rays, starfish and sea urchins close up - experienced guides will be able to tell you all about the creatures. The open sea tank holds an impressive 250 tonnes of sea water and is where you'll find lots of deep water creatures, from household favourites such as cod, turbot and halibut to more scary examples like sharks and conger eels. You can even watch as Exploris divers swim around the tanks feeding the sharks and congers! Depending on the time of year, you can also go on an accompanied shore walk where you'll get to see animals in their natural habitat along the coast. To find out more visit www.exploris.org.uk
How does an Abacus Work
How does an Abacus Work The abacus or counting frame is an ancient calculating tool. It origins can be traced back to the Sumerian civilization about 2500 BC. It was widespread use in ancient Egypt, Greece and Persia. Today it has been largely replaced by calculators. But in Asia and Africa it is still widely used by merchants and traders. The abacus consists of two parts, one above the other. Each part has of columns of beads. The lower part usually holds five beads and the upper part of one or two beads. The main idea of the abacus is that tens contains ones, and the hundreds contain tens and so on. And if you have 10 ones you can just break down 1 bead in the column of tens. It means, that in lower the column we have the ones place, in the second one we have tens, in the third hundreds, in the fourth thousands, in fifth tens thousands and so on. To calculate with an abacus you first have to input a number. To do so, break the number down into single digits. For example break 26 into 2 ten plus 6 units. Move, from the tens column, a number of beads equal to the tens digit. In our example, this number is two. Similarly move, from the units column, a number of beads equal to the units digit. Notice that in this example that number is 6, and there are only five beads. To overcome this problem, move one bead up from the upper part of the abacus. That bead is equal to 5. Now just move 1 more beads from the lower part. Next, input the second number. This depends on whether you are adding or subtracting. If you are adding, divide the number into digits just like above and move up further beads in addition to those already up. If you are subtracting, break down the number into digits exactly like above, but bring down beads from the ones already above. After inputting the second number correctly you have already completed the addition or subtraction. You only need to read out the number by counting the number of beads in every column. This will give you the value of each digit. Of course if the value of any digit exceeds nine, subtract 10 from the value and add 1 to the digit at one larger place value. For example, if you get 2 in the hundreds position, 13 in the tens position, and 1 in the units position, subtract 10 from the 12 in the tens position and add 1 to the 2 in the hundreds position. This will give you a result of 331. Still confused? Check out this video to learn how to multiply and substract with an abacus. If you need in-person help to learn how an abacus works in particular or the math related to it we recommend to find an abacus-math tutor.
How to Survive N00bdom in League of Legends
How to Survive N00bdom in League of Legends League of Legends is quite the challenging game, but as with all things, it just takes time. Photo by marckvision on Flickr. League of Legends is an immensely popular free-to-play combat strategy game with 32 million monthly active players. As a PC gamer, its almost impossible to avoid LoL, as its usually called, but I didnt want to become hooked on a game that takes about 45 minutes per match during the school year, so I started learning to play LoL just a week ago. And thats when I discovered how very unfriendly the League of Legends community can be. stop feeding the enemy u ****ing n00b, why are you even playing, and (my username) so good, wtf go die are all milder comments that Ive received while playing. Needless to say, its not easy being a n00b in the LoL community. Here are some tips on how to survive n00bdom which Ive learned after a week or so of intense playing and improvement from n00b to a somewhat not horrible player. 1. Do your homework The internet is your best friend! Before you start playing, do a bit of reading and learn about how the game is played because the in-game tutorial is horrible. I suggest this guide which has a bunch of terms and basic ideas that you want to know. When you know what champion (character) youd like to play, find build guides written by pro players usually with strategies on how to best win a game with your character. Watch livestreams or Youtube videos of pro players or spectate some games from the LoL client itself and take some tips. League of Legends is a difficult game to understand, so a bit of homework goes a long way. (Yes, I know its summer, but its for a purpose!) A Tryndamere cosplayer at Pax Prime 2012. Photo by getdarwin on Flickr. 2. Play with a friend if possible If you can, grab a buddy who knows how to play LoL. They can give you friendly pointers on what to improve and show you the ropes. Most importantly, if other players start verbally harassing you, they will stand up for you. A lot of the negativity in the LoL community is because players dont stick up for each other. If a friend says, theyre new, give them a break or we all have bad days, it happens, players are much more likely to back off than if you try to defend yourself. Also the game is just a lot more fun with friends! 3. Play a lot of bot games Bot games or games against computer controlled champions are a great way to practice your skills. Theyre very low-key because most players play bot games for stress relief and practice, so theres not much pressure should you mess up. Playing bots is a great way to get accustomed to gameplay and to get used to a champion. PvP (player vs. player) games are much more stressful and players tend to get more riled up during them; they also require a lot more skill because humans are unpredictable. Id recommend not playing PvP until you have a grasp on basics such as last-hitting and general roles. 4. Tell people you are new LoL takes a lot of practice and patience. Photo by DrabikPany on Flickr. Dont be afraid to admit that you are new. Yes, some jerks will make fun of you, but most players are understanding if you let them know that you might need some help. A simple, Hey all, Im new so Im not very good at this game, but Ill try my best will let your teammates know that youll need extra protection and will let them know why you will be dying a lot. Otherwise, some players may try to report you for feeding, or letting the other team kill you so they win. If youve made an honest effort to show that you are new at the game and trying your best, thats usually well-appreciated. 5. Ignore Lets say a player wont stop harassing you about how youre such a n00b. The ignore button works wonders. Learn it. Love it. It will mute your teammate/enemy/frenemy(?) and youll no longer be able to see their spew of hate. I try to be cautious with this because the chat is very integral, but if they have nothing better to say than verbal abuse then anything they have to say about actual gameplay has no worth to me. 6. Report toxic players Make sure in the post-game stage to report verbal abuse or negative attitude. Always use the additional comments box to detail how they were a toxic player. This goes to the Tribunal, who review cases and try to make LoL a better community! Its okay to be a n00b, but it does attract a lot of negative attention and it does make it difficult to get better. But with time and a lot of practice, you too can safely escape the realm of n00bdom! Do you have your own tips? Let us know in the comments.
Ask a Nerd! Writers Block - TutorNerds
Ask a Nerd! Writers Block - TutorNerds Ask a Nerd! Question: I always get writerâs block. Whatâs the cure? Brief: Writerâs block is very common but it can drain a lot of your time. This can become especially important if you are doing an in-class essay for an AP class or if you are limited to 25-30 minutes for your SAT or ACT essay. As an Orange County private English tutor, I recommend breaking up your writing process into two steps. Answer I once had a fabulous professor who told me to âjust writeâ and worry about the rest later. I found his advice to be extremely helpful throughout the rest of college and beyond. Break your writing up into two steps: Writing and editing (READ: 5 Reasons Students Should Blog). Step 1 Just write. Write anything, anything at all. Write something that has to do with the subject. Write something that has nothing to do with the subject. If you are particularly stuck then write: âI donât know what to write because I have writerâs block and I donât really have a stance on whether or not authority figures are an important part of my life because I think itâs just a good idea to do as Iâm toldâ. Oh wait, you just wrote a rough draft for your thesis on authority figures! See how that works? If you have something on paper, an Irvine English tutor can help you with step two but a tutor can do absolutely nothing with a blank page. I also like to call writerâs block âblank page syndromeâ, because a blank page is really no help at all. Getting back to the point Write down anything. You can write about the weather or how you are annoyed that you have to sit down and write. The main idea is to get the brain started on its task and to cease avoiding the undertaking of essay writing (READ: Five Books to Help You Write Well). Step 2 Edit. Once you have a rough draft with tons of typos, grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and sentence structure issues (remember this is part of a rough draft), you can move on to the editing process. Getting the content down is the most important part, and you have already completed that. You can edit on your own, edit with a study group or ask a tutor for help. If you are in an AP class or if the SAT exam is in your near future, then I recommend having a tutor look through at least some of your work to see if you are on the right track. Step 3 Time yourself. If you are planning to prepare for a timed essay then you need to practice getting your time down to at least 2-3 minutes under the clock. So, if you only have 25 minutes to complete an essay, then you should be able to finish in 22-23 minutes after a lot of practice. Timed writing is one of the most common problems for students as it is much easier to write, and write well when you have plenty of time. Master the first two steps and donât start on step three until you feel entirely comfortable that your content and editing abilities are first-rate. A tutor can also help you with many strategies for speed writing (and speed reading). You can start by timing yourself using the quick-timer on your phone. Remember to practice in a place with little to no noise distractions (CLICK: Top Ten Tips For Timed Writing). Have a question for one of our nerds? Tweet it to us @TutorNerds.
